PELOTON WATTER BOTTLE HOLDER

PELOTON Redesigned Water Bottle Holder 2019 Personal Project

After using Peloton bikes for the first time at a gym, I noticed 3 of the 4 bikes had broken water bottle holders, all broken in the same area. I did some research and found out that a large portion of other Peloton members had encountered the same problem. This led me to redesign a water bottle holder around the flaws of the current design.

Current Design Flaw

Heavy water bottles and the slight movement created when the rider is out of the saddle create a twisting force on the sleeve of the water bottle holder. This leads to the sleeve cracking at its weakest point, just behind the screw holes.

Research

Watching an instructional video describing how to remove the water bottle holder I discovered the 2 most forward screws on the sleeve don’t need to be loosened or tightened to either remove or reinstall the water bottle holder. This made me question their need.

Further research led me to to find an Etsy posting for wider bottle holders to hold a larger range of bottles. As larger water bottles such as Klean Kanteen and Hydro Flask become ever more popular, this is an important design consideration.

Understanding the Form

Due to the fact that I only had pictures and videos to reference and didn’t have direct access to a peloton bike during the design process, I made a quick paper model to help me better understand the form of the sleeve.

Final Design

1. Smooth transition from sleeve to arm, to bottle holder. 2. New design slots into existing brake housing.

3. Multiple diameters of the bottle holder allow it to hold a wider range of bottles. From standard 25 oz bottles to 40 oz Hydroflasks.

4. Slightly thicker and taller front section with no screws to spread out the force of the heavy water bottles.
